Jessii, Keith and I moved to Garretson South Dakota in 1993, purchasing a building on Main Street that had been Johnson's Drug on December 5th, 1997. We did this because of the office space it provided. The large office in the back was renovated to provide two offices.
After renovating the office we needed to decide what to do with the rest of the large building. Eight-year-old Jessica Kassandra, with her brilliant smile and eyes sparkling, had a wonderful idea. She said “Let’s name it Rainbow-Delight!” Foolishly we adults did not. As I was, what some might call, a health nut and wanted to help people by teaching them about healthy foods, we named the store Haffer Health and Gifts. The gift part was because we wanted to provide quality and reasonably priced gifts, cards and balloons for individuals of our community with limited incomes. Our store began with health foods, balloons, cards and gifts.
The merchandise in the store expanded due to our travels, visits to other stores and requests. We did not advertise until 2003. Jessii began working in the store at the age of 8, and by the time she was 9, knew more about what people wanted than I did. Jessii was a people person and seemed to always find the right thing for the right person and her gift-wrapping skills were amazing. She managed to work at the store, go to school, and be involved in band, volunteer and so much more. To find out more about this extraordinary child and young woman you can go to www.jessicahaffer.com. After God called Jessii home on November 23, 2003, we stopped the advertising and in many ways her dad and I stopped too.
Although we had discussed the Internet before Jessii transcended in 2003, my husband did not think it was a good idea. Finally in 2007 we changed the name of the store to what Jessii wanted us to name it in the first place Rainbow-Delight and in the summer of 2008, we began to advertise again. All past and present employees at Rainbow-Delight will tell you they have had Jessii experiences and know that she protects the store. Her dad and I have had those experiences also, at the store, everywhere we have gone and everywhere we go. We believe that just as Jessii loved all unconditionally, love is eternal.
Jeri, forever mom of Jessica (Jessii).
